SPOTLIGHT: ‘Heat Lightning Poems’ by Carl Carr

caught between
the hammer
and the shooter
medulla oblongotta
pinpoint pupils
hypoid ventilation
whispers
in the wind
still as
a mountain
insatiable as
a tiger
folly
everywhere
carrerra de los muertos

japanese tapas
mexican kimonos
a pot of fat
on the
gas stove
boils over
runs across
the stove
and burns
the cat
the maid
thinks of calling
an alarm
but reconsiders
runs to the cellar
for the garden hose
and faints from fright
curling winds
howl and shriek
field mouse flees
owl turns
a blind ear
sizzling rain
stinging nettles
unseat river
stones
send them
running free reign
wish wash
wetland stumble
scattered and scared
they gather
at the barn
door
swig fresh hooch
share the daily
horrors
with dirt brothers
and
wooden horses
as life burns

dodging aspersions
psychic diversions

caring
and
sharing
is often staring
into the jaws of destruction

hobbling
into
future
and
dark
despair

disappearing
where i am standing
living on
the edge of
the razor
numb winter
lust

unable to
come
to candles
a generation
in love
with
chancy art
formaldehyde
reckonings
and
rosetta
stones
the
traveler
of the horizon
is the traveler
possessed of
impetuous muses
sirens of
paradise
must have
more
cruel
brewery maids
draw short
straws
for
long fellows
taste the
time
wait for
velvet
dream filaments

heat lightning
cold carrion
waists of an hourglass
teeth of a tiger
women
with
rosette
mouths
and bouquets
of stars
amid the last
polar latitudes
with
tracks of teeth
white mice
white earth
tongues rubbed amber
and glass
girl with
tongue
of
ghost
stabbed tongue of
host
doll
opens
and
closes
its eyes
tongue of
unbelievable stone
women with
fluffy
eyelashes
strokes of
child writing
eyebrows
from
the
odalisque
edge
river locks
and
nest of swallows
undersea
molehill
breasts
fastidious wheat
millstone legs
clockwork calves
moments of despair
elder tree limbs
celiac
sacrifice
flotsam of
stingrays
cross contamination
of
armpits
buttocks of
midsummer nights
rings of keys
neck wattles
of
the valley of gold
or
torrid
trysts
in
the
torrent
and
cleft
of
the
claw
